Cattle and Pigs

The Warriner Herd of Dexters:

The farm owns 18 adult dexters of black and red colour (17 cows and 1 bull). Dexters are the smallest breed of British cattle. They originated in South West Ireland and they come in three basic colours. The commonest colour is black but there are also red and dun.

The cows are kept as a suckler herd. The female calves are kept or sold for breeding, the steers (castrated males) are sold for beef, from the farm. We usually have 20 - 25 young heifers and steers on the farm at any one time.

Pigs

The farm has 8 pedigree Gloucester Old Spots sows and a boar. These are a traditional breed producing pork, bacon and sausages.

The pigs are kept in both indoor and outdoor systems. In the indoor system the animals are kept on wood chippings which allows them to root around in a similar fashion to outdoors. We grow stubble turnips to provide fodder for the pigs during the winter months.
